Paris Hilton will not appeal against her 45-day prison sentence for violating her probation for a drink-driving conviction.

The 26-year-old is to serve only half of her sentence - about 23 days - after being given credit for good behaviour.

Los Angeles Superior Court spokeswoman Katherine Roberts said Hilton's lawyer notified the court that the reality TV star was abandoning her appeal.

Hilton is due to begin her sentence on 5 June in a suburb of Los Angeles.

Special unit

Officials said earlier this week that several factors were considered in granting her the shorter jail term, including the fact that she had appeared at her latest court hearing.

Hilton, 26, will stay in a block that contains 12 cells, each holding two people.

It is reserved for celebrities, public officials, police officers and other high-profile inmates.

The unit is part of the Century Regional Detention Centre in Lynwood, California, which holds over 2,000 prisoners.

Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton would have the same privileges as all other prisoners, including at least an hour out of her cell each day to shower, watch TV, take part in outdoor recreation or use the phone.

Mr Whitmore would not reveal if specific security arrangements would be made for Hilton, amid speculation the paparazzi might try to take photographs of her in prison.

"If anyone tries to take advantage of this situation they will be dealt with swiftly and harshly," Mr Whitmore told the AFP news agency.

"This is not an e-ticket ride at Disneyland. This is a serious matter and it is not to be treated frivolously," he added.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Paris Hilton is "emotionally distraught and traumatized" over her 45-day jail sentence and isn't capable of testifying in a civil lawsuit against her, the socialite-reality TV star's psychiatrist said.

Dr. Charles Sophy has been seeing Hilton, 26, for the past eight months and has talked with her several times since her May 4 hearing for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case, according to court papers.

Sophy said Hilton needs time to recover from the shock of receiving jail time before testifying in a civil case brought against her by actress and diamond heiress Zeta Graff.

Messages left with Hilton's spokesman and lawyer weren't immediately returned early Tuesday.

In court papers filed Monday, Sophy said Hilton is "distraught and traumatized as a consequence of the findings at the May 4 hearing ... and her fear of incarceration."

"At this point in time," he continued, "Ms. Hilton cannot effectively respond to examination as a witness or provide any significant input into her defense."

Graff filed a $10 million lawsuit against Hilton in 2005, claiming the reality TV star spread "vicious lies" about her. Hilton has denied that she was behind a report alleging Graff once tried to grab a necklace worth $4 million from her throat.

Superior Court Judge Linda K. Lefkowitz postponed the trial to August. It had been scheduled to begin this month.

Hilton and her pal Nicole Richie star on "The Simple Life," which throws them into everyday situations. After famously feuding and filming their parts separately last season, the celebutantes have reunited as camp counselors for the show's upcoming installment on the Comcast Corp.-operated E! network.

Paris Hilton was supposed to kickoff a cross-country road race today, but sources tell TMZ she'll likely be a no-show.

Ms. Hilton is scheduled to participate in BullRun 2007, a race from Montreal to Key West, but a rep for the race now confirms to TMZ that jail-bound blonde will be chauffeured to and from destinations on the route, with the convicted socialite hosting a party at the Versace mansion in Miami.

Elliot Mintz cryptically tells TMZ that Paris "will be in L.A. this weekend," not Canada, so unless Hilton possesses the powers of Hiro Nakamura, it's safe to say the heiress won't be at the starting line.

Paris Hilton's enemies are just loving her upcoming jail sentence -- and Shanna Moakler can't help but rub it in.

In a thinly veiled message on Moakler's MySpace page, the former beauty queen writes, "i guess you all might be wondering what i think about all the karma going around...i guess all i have to say is...."stupid is as stupid does." Snap!

Moakler has taken her frustrations out on Paris via her MySpace page ever since the heiress was seen smooching in a club with Shanna's on-and-off-again hubby, tatty Travis Barker. Looks like Paris in jail is a point for Team Moakler.

The Free Paris posse can petition all they want, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't interested. According to the AP, Arnold's answer today to whether he'll consider pardoning the jail-bound heiress was simply: "I have many more important things to think about."

The governor's words end a week of work by Paris supporters, who claim that authorities are using the socialite as a scapegoat. The petition to spare her from jail time has gained the approval of The Hills star Spencer Pratt and Paris herself.

Hilton arrived Monday night at attorney Robert Shapiro’s “Sober Day USA” event on the Paramount Studios lot in Los Angeles with sister Nicky and embattled publicist Elliot Mintz. The flack had resigned Sunday but at Monday night’s event he told Us, “The rumors of our professional separation were overexaggerated,” and he was back on as Hilton’s publicist. “I continue to be her media rep,” Mintz continued. “She remains a client…and more importantly a dear friend.”

Bypassing the red carpet, Hilton kept a low-profile in a sleeveless silk dress and gold shoes. Later, she posed for pictures with Mintz and Robert Shapiro, who, in 2006, declared the first Monday in May “Sober Day” in memory of his drug-using late son, Brent.

Though Paris held it together, a witness tells Us her eyes were tearing.

Perhaps she remembered she has only 29 days left on the outside?

Regardless, Paris wasn’t upset for long. She left Sober Day and headed to the Roxy, where she stood on top of her table and danced to the band Phantom Planet. Paris and Mintz were singing along to the group’s hit “California.” A source tells Us, “Paris looked happy to be out.” She slipped out the back door as soon as the show ended at 12:50 a.m.
